The Reverend Edward Gray (1893–1959) was a British missionary and author who served with the China Inland Mission during the 1920s. He established the Church of the East in China, a community of indigenous Christians, and became the foundation for a national church in East Asia. He was also the first head of the prestigious St Hilda’s College, Oxford after its foundation in 1925.
Life and work
The Reverend Edward Gray was born in 1895 in Llanmartin, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the only son of the Reverend Henry Gray and his wife Sarah. After attending the local school, Gray was apprenticed to a joiner until 1914, when he decided to join the Church of England. In 1915, Gray volunteered to serve in the armed forces, and was posted to Egypt to serve in the 22nd (Service) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He served as a lieutenant in Gallipoli and then in Macedonia, before being invalided out of the army in 1917.
Gray returned home to West Wales, and in 1919 went on to work as a Methodist minister in Swansea, where he worked in conjunction with the Chinese mission movement. The Evangelical Alliance withdrew funding from the movement in 1921, and Gray followed the majority of other missionaries in choosing to work for a non-sectarian and independent approach to evangelism. He contacted various churches, including the Church Missionary Society, to be invited to come to China. He was successful in his requests, and was ordained as a deacon in the Church Mission Society in 1922, before sailing for China in the following year.
Gray arrived in Shanghai in 1923, and secured a post with the China Inland Mission (CIM). The CIM had been founded in 1847, and was run by a committee in London, with branches across North America, India, Ceylon, South Africa, and China. They worked with the British and American governments to

But while this ballot measure is widely expected to pass, it may not be the last we hear of the issue.
It turns out the pot legalization battle is about more than just one ballot measure. Statewide legalization may be the first step, but there’s a growing group of activists and political players who want to take the story much further.
According to political insiders, a proposal to decouple the state’s marijuana laws from alcohol was conceived in the wake of the vote on Amendment 64. But, it came too late to effect the 2012 ballot and was picked up by social activists a few years later, in the same wave of new state policies championed by a group that included Marc Levine and Susan Sarandon.
“I think the original impetus that it was brewing in the advocacy space was the marijuana establishment eventually had to make their peace with marijuana,” says longtime marijuana policy watcher Mason Tvert, who is leading the campaign.
Tvert launched the Colorado Safe Access Alliance (CSAA), along with medical marijuana groups, at the start of the year.
The new group’s mission? To take marijuana policy in the state beyond the influence of the marijuana industry.
As Tvert tells it, state leaders have signaled an intention to reform marijuana policy — to reduce penalties, remove civil asset forfeiture from marijuana, and create safer regulations for medical marijuana. Tvert says CSAA is lobbying lawmakers and state agencies to make good on those promises.
But outside the industry, Tvert says the marijuana industry has waged a campaign of misinformation, particularly in the court of public opinion. His group is specifically targeting state lawmakers and the media, saying they’re
