This guide is designed for beginners and you are encouraged to use it to edit your pictures right away and not wait for Photoshop to open and let its progress scare you off. This might not work out as you expect because of the great feature set available in Photoshop. The First Step in Editing Although most images look fine when you take them, editing in Photoshop is the first step to correcting any problems you might find. Do not wait until you have your image printed and hand it to a potential customer for the first time. This way you can correct your images before you send them out. This correction can be done with any photo editor, but Photoshop lets you manipulate a lot of elements, so it’s the perfect tool for image editing. Choosing a perspective One of the first things you should do before you start editing is to change your perspective. All digital images are shot in 3D space. For example, a person standing in front of a wall has a certain distance between him and the wall, and this distance translates to a distinct height for the person in the picture. The camera captures that distance and translates it to digital image pixels. This section tells you how to make adjustments to the 3D perspective for your images. The main tools for changing perspective are: Scale: A camera may only have a limited amount of resolution. With a digital camera, this amount is called the number of megapixels that the camera can capture. Perspective: We discussed this tool in the section “Figuring out perspective,” earlier in the chapter. This tool is used to change the perspective that a shot will produce. Distortion: This tool is used when a subject is too close to the camera. Changing the distance from your subject will make the picture look realistic and in focus. We describe this tool in the section, “Correcting distortion.” JPEG Stacks: The JPEG or Joint Photographic Experts Group standard defines how pictures should be stored. The JPEG format has many standard settings, and each setting allows for different levels of compression, or compression. Therefore, the more you compress your images, the more it can save your memory. In the section, “Creating JPEG stacks to save disk space,” we discuss the use of this format. However, if one object was a “squiggly line” and the other an “arrow pointing to an object” then it would recognize this as a “squiggly line” and a “arrow pointing to an object” even if the objects were a completely different shape.
